The St. Denis Chapel is located in the City Point National Historic District of Hopewell. Nearby is Appomattox Manor, the headquarters of General Grant during the latter stages of the Civil War.

The chapel was constructed in 1887 as a Catholic chapel for U.S. Navy personnel in the area. In 1981 the building, at that point a private home, was deeded to HHF. The building was restored and opened to the public in 1995. As of 2023, St. Denis once again became a private residence.
